Harvest Notes 2009

The 2009 growing season started off with a cool spring, followed by a long warm summer, allowing the fruit to develop intense flavours producing wine of good concentration.

Our fruit was hand harvested in April, after which, the Pinot Noir went on to spend 11 months in French Oak barriques, before being bottled and rested until now!!

Vineyard Notes: Single Vineyard, Bendigo, Central Otago and one of the warmest areas in the district, with below average rainfall and high sunshine hours. Bendigo’s rainfall is approximately 300mm per annum, summer temperatures are very hot and dry, followed by cool nights develop rich flavours found in the fruit. Our Pinot Noir vines are a mix of ‘Dijon’ and ‘Pommard’ clones grafted onto different rootstocks. The vineyard landscape is made up of slopes and terraces consisting of various free-draining alluvial soils. All these factors combined, produce low yielding vines and enhance the flavour intensity in our wines. The Mondillo 2009 Pinot Noir contains 100% estate grown fruit from the Bendigo vineyard terraces. The vineyard is meticulously shoot thinned, leaf plucked and yields reduced by hand. Mondillo fruit is hand harvested when the fruit is at its physiological ripeness ensuring the optimum flavours are captured.

Winery Notes:  Our Pinot Noir is produced with a combination of Pommard and Dijon clones, each of which were fermented individually. The fruit was 100% de-stemmed followed by a cold maceration before being inoculated followed by a post fermentation maceration, pressed and put to barrel for 11 months. The Oak regime that is used is 100% French Oak, consisting of 30% new, 30% one year old, and 40% two years and older. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation, was fined with egg white, and bottled.
